The General Directorate of Consumer Protection in North Batinah Governorate recently issued an administrative violation against a commercial center for conducting unauthorized promotions on social media. This action highlights CPA's commitment to ensuring compliance with consumer protection regulations.
The case arose after a consumer reported that the commercial center advertised discounts and promotions through a social media influencer without obtaining the necessary permits. Law Enforcement Officers from the Directorate promptly investigated, confirming that the promotions had indeed been conducted without authorization. This unauthorized activity violates Article 35 of the Executive Regulations of the Consumer Protection Law (Resolution No. 77/2017), which mandates that any provider conducting promotions must first secure approval from the relevant authorities, coordinated with the Consumer Protection Authority, and clearly inform consumers of the promotion's terms.
As a result, the commercial center received a violation notice and was fined OMR 1,000. This action underscores the requirement that promotions and discounts must have prior approval from the competent authorities. The Consumer Protection Authority, in collaboration with these bodies, rigorously reviews pricing, discount rates, and compliance with legal standards, ensuring transparency and protection for consumers.
